Comm has been built with the help of an AI Agent. Here's a note on why, and what we do about the environmental cost of using it.

Hi everyone,

Jamie here. I want to write a little about our use of AI here at Comm because I firmly believe that it has serious environmental and societal problems.

I’m firmly in the ‘extremely suspicious about the use of AI’ camp. We use AI in two ways, to help code the App and also as an interface for others to use the app (via MCP etc).

Regarding the former: I’m a Tech Director by trade, coding is a hobby. I’m an average HTML/Python coder and a terrible swift coder. This is (by the nature of Comm’s functions) a complex app, and I wouldn’t have been able to create it as it needs to be without some very advanced coding that would either be prohibitively expensive or time consuming without AI.

Regarding the latter: Fortunately or unfortunately, AI use is prevalent in our society. I wanted to make it easier for people to interact with our site, and the best way to do this is with a MCP that we control to restrict that use to the most necessary functions. My thought is that people will mostly use it to bulk-add Devices and Users and then will need to sit down and work out what goes where…using AI to guess that would probably be a terrible idea.

I wanted to write this so you’re under no illusion on what we use AI for. It isn’t writing copy, it isn’t thinking of features or setting options, it isn’t running in the background on the website for some unknown reason, and most importantly it isn’t accessing your data unless you add your own Agent yourself.

How we offset our energy use

Comm has been built with the help of an AI coding agent, and is hosted on cloud servers. That has a real energy cost, so we measure it honestly rather than ignore it. We total the actual tokens the agent has processed building this site (input, output, and cache) and convert that to an energy estimate using published third-party research on AI coding-agent electricity use.

As of September 2026, that totals roughly 536 kWh (≈225 kg CO2e, using average US grid intensity) across this App. We recalculate this periodically as work continues so we can track our up-to-date usage.

We're committed to offsetting this footprint through Puro.earth-verified carbon removal credits, biochar and enhanced rock weathering rather than cheaper avoidance-style credits. We'll update this page with the details once that purchase is made.
